EJM ON NEMO
EJM, a commercial developer with properties in California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico engaged SPF:a to redesign and expand their corporate headquarters in West Hollywood. The new, triangle-shaped building will sit behind the existing EJM office space on Santa Monica Boulevard at Nemo Avenue, connected via a glass bridge on the second floor. Realizing that they would need a convincing design argument to connect the old and new building above a city-owned alley, EJM engaged SPF:a for its strong reputation in the City of West Hollywood. The West Hollywood City Council recently approved the new building and bridge design, and SPF:a is commencing with design development on the project.
“The triangular site plan of the building, with all of its challenges, ultimately became a creative force and opportunity for some exciting architecture,” expressed architect Zoltan E. Pali, FAIA. “As is often the case, the constraints of the project have ended up shaping a pretty interesting form and program.”
The new four storey building will house roughly 18,000-square feet of office space, a 2,500-square foot commercial art gallery for lease, and four residential units totaling 6,500-square feet. A glass bridge connects the new building to EJM’s current headquarters on Santa Monica Blvd.
EJM Development Co. was formed in 1973 by Eugene and Jerry Monkarsh to acquire, develop, and manage industrial, commercial and residential properties. Since then, the family-run company has grown to become one of the leading industrial/commercial developers in the western states. EJM’s focused, long term commitment to its tenants and the surrounding communities has resulted in a portfolio of high quality, well designed buildings, to which SPF:a is proud to contribute with this new project.
