Jerrold E. Lomax, FAIA: The First 80 Years First known for his design leadership at Craig Ellwood’s architecture studio from the 1950’s through the early 1960’s, Jerrold E. Lomax FAIA may well be one of the most overlooked modern masters of mid-century architecture and the Case Study Program. Lomax designed 25 plus buildings during his tenure with Ellwood, and was followed by a succession of other gifted design associates, including Philo Jacobson, Gerald Horn and James Tyler. When Tyler resigned, Ellwood at age 55 closed his office. In 1976, the Pacific Design Center included Lomax in its original “LA12”, an exhibition recognizing twelve Los Angeles’ architects for their significant architectural contributions and potential. This initial prestigious group also included Frank Gehry, Craig Ellwood, Ray Kappe, Cesar Pelli, Anthony Lumsden, John Lautner, and Daniel Dworsky. At this year’s AIACC Monterey Design Conference, Lomax will keynote as ‘tribal elder,’ an honor bestowed upon those who have made a significant contribution to the profession. Since then, his work has unfolded into a beautiful architectural tapestry across California. Although Lomax has designed and received awards for numerous commercial and industrial projects, it is his stunning single-family residences that have best captured the essence of his modernist philosophy and approach. |
