WALLIS ANNENBERG CENTER for the PERFORMING ARTS

In February 2006, the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts engaged SPF:a to convert a landmark site -- the historic Beverly Hills Post Office -- into a performing arts center that will be the hub of the city’s proposed cultural programs. The city, in conjunction with the Center’s board of directors, selected SPF:a because of its reputation for historic preservation and its award-winning, solution-focused design sensibilities.

“Picture New York’s glorious Lincoln Center, but scaled down to fit the more intimate environs of Beverly Hills. Our world-renowned array of restaurants, hotels and shops within easy parking and walking distance makes this an ideal site for a performing arts venue and public plaza,” says Lou Moore, Executive Director of the Center.

“We feel that SPF:a’s respect for preservation and their ability to produce stunning modern work are the perfect combination for taking us where we want to go with this project.” The complete project includes restoration of the 1930s Beverly Hills Post Office building, which will house a 150-seat studio/rehearsal space, classrooms and production offices. Adjoining the historic building, and just steps away, will be the bold, new contemporary 500-seat Goldsmith Theater. A sunken plaza with a sculpture garden will face Canon Drive and the shopping district to the West. Construction is scheduled to begin by 2007. Rodney Freeman of The Freeman Group will manage the project on behalf of WACPA, Arc Engineering and Structural Focus will provide engineering services for the project.
